The word “ballet” comes from the Italian term “ballet,” which means to dance or jump about. The dance form started back in the 15th century, in the Italian Renaissance courts. But it has taken on many adaptations since, ultimately becoming a well-known style of dance worldwide. Ballet requires incredible strength, coordination and flexibility, and has become part of conditioning programs for many athletes, from swimmers to football players. In recent years, more adaptive exercise programs have started to incorporate ballet, and it continues to grow in popularity as a healing form of movement. As a physical therapist who specializes in multiple sclerosis, I consider it a valuable tool for patients.
