Finding Mobility and Accessibility Resources

Your multiple sclerosis symptoms can make it hard to get around. This can affect how much you do and how involved you are. To stay as mobile as possible, your transportation options and your home must suit your needs.Mobility and accessibility resources include:
  • Dealers of adaptive vehicles or vehicle modifications
  • Paratransit services
  • Builders that make home modifications and repairs
  • Sources of ramps and stair lifts

  • Do they install the equipment?
  • How much is installation and repair?
  • Are there additional fees?

  • Shop at a medical equipment provider.
  • Ask if the vendor participates in Medicare or Medicaid if you are a beneficiary.
  • Look for vendors who are Certified Complex Rehab Technology Suppliers (CRTS)or assistive technology professionals on staff. You can find these professionals in the directory hosted by the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America.
  • Do they install the equipment?
  • How much is installation and repair?
  • Are there additional fees?

    • Install the ramp non-skid surfaces.
    • If the ramp is outside, make sure it’s built so water cannot accumulate on the surface.
    • Make sure the handrail position is at the right height.
    • For access ramps that lead to doors (i.e., in an entryway), the way that the door swings may also need to be changed.

    • If your stairs are a single flight of straight stairs, you can use a straight stair lift.
    • Stairs with a turn or landing need a curved stair lift.
    • Consider a swivel chair feature on a straight stair lift.
    • Choose a stair lift with the right weight capacity.
