Peter Calabresi, MD (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore) is leading a team to determine whether blood levels of neurofilament light chain (NfL) — a protein released when nerves are damaged — can be used to monitor MS and predict its course.

The MS Prodrome

Evidence suggests that MS has a prodrome: an early phase of unspecific symptoms before the appearance of more typical signs of MS. If researchers confirm that these early symptoms point to MS, healthcare providers will be able to detect the disease earlier and improve treatment results.At the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, a team led by Kjetil Bjornevik, MD, PhD, is testing the possibility of an MS prodrome in two large studies of women nurses. They are comparing those who developed MS and those who did not, looking for early signs such as:

Depression or anxiety
Lower physical activity
Higher incidence of nerve conditions, pain, tiredness and bladder complaints

There are likely many factors that play a role in any person’s disease course, which makes it difficult to predict the optimal therapy or future severity. Amber Salter, PhD, MPH (University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas) and collaborators are applying sophisticated data analysis tools to better understand the factors that drive MS progression. They are examining links between comorbidities — when a person has MS and one or more other disorders — and outcomes from completed MS treatment clinical trials.
