How Yoga Benefits MS

Practicing Yoga With MS

Yoga targets specific parts of the body and can work for any body type. With adaptive yoga, you can modify the poses to suit your needs and abilities. You can stand, sit in a chair or wheelchair, or lie down. Some days you may need props to perform the poses. Other days, you may be more independent as you go through your practice.A carepartner or family member can partner with you and help you access more poses. Practicing together is also a fun way to better understand each other’s needs and abilities.

Meditation

Many people incorporate meditation into their yoga practice. Meditation involves stilling the mind and quieting thoughts while being aware of them without distraction. There is no single, correct way to meditate. Any activity that causes you to narrow your focus is meditation. This includes activities like knitting, gardening or just observing birds from your window.Consistent practice is key. It may be difficult at first, but it will get easier with practice.Guided meditation can help you focus and relax. Guided meditation includes:
  • Repeating a phrase or sound
  • Focusing your gaze on an object (e.g., a candle or flowers)
  • Breathing slowly and intentionally.
Meditation becomes easier with consistent practice. You may find it helpful to use a guided meditation app on your phone or tablet.
